JOE DODGE: EVEN IF YOURE NOT A PRACTICING ANYTHING,YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN THIS SONG. (09/20/07)

BILL COHEN: I believe that this was written for his second wife who was a backup singer with Dylan's band. She was a Gospel singer and evidently a confirmed Christian. This was a marriage that lasted 5 years and produced a daughter. In his book and in the song he tried hard to convince himsef that this was his wonderful wife who was beautiful..I felt that he was having a hard time with it, especially when one compares it to his song Sara, and The Wedding song. In his book he describes getting up in the middle of the night, wanting to take her for a motorcycle ride in New Orleans. She is reported to say " what's the matter now". This is not what a loving wife says unless she is generally annoyed with her husband. It was at a point in his life where he was trying to get songs together for the album, Oh Mercey, and was having a very dificult time. The album turned out to be excellent, but the marriage seemed wrong for him When he says that she " has a contract with the lord" it seemed strange. Dylan never thought about Christianity or Judiasm as a "contract" He was much deeper than that. (05/19/06)

SONNY: This song is beautiful. One of his best love songs of the 1980's. (02/25/06)
