"Together Through Life", Track #5

WHO CARES: Imagine you're a baby-boomer who grew up loving this boundary-breaker's wit, intelligence, and spirit. Now imagine it's 40 years later and you're wondering where your memories have faded to. Now listen to this baneful lament from your hero, who has also begun to wonder where the richness of his memories have gone - so many loves, so many places, so many wonderful experiences, and where have they gone? Nobody could speak it better, or with more authority than the guy who warned "the times they are a-changin'". Jeezus, this is great stuff. (07/31/09)

GARDENERISGONE: This is a thing of beauty--the ageless grainy texture of the recording, and the lyrics so elegant. He sings to himself, to the memory of love that can't be revived but that can still cause pain. He sings to his own heart, and creates tenderness and grief for his own loss. Such clarity in the singing, each word lit by sadness. This is a simple song, and the kind of simple miracle that can be overlooked in Dylan's work. And it's set just perfectly in the track list, a quiet pool of feeling amidst the barbs and blues. (05/04/09)
